Top officials from the Internal Revenue Service recently appeared at an event for African-American clergy to remind religious leaders that federal law prohibits houses of worship from endorsing or opposing candidates for public office.

Pastors Preaching Politics Can Lose Church’s Tax Exempt Status, Warns IRS
We think that we can all see why this issue is coming up since same sex marriage has been preached all over the country since NC ban on the vote.
Pastors meeting in Washington have been warned about political activities that could jeopardize their churches’ tax-exempt status.
IRS regional manager Peter Lorenzetti told the Faith Leaders Summit that prohibited activities include endorsing or opposing candidates, campaigning for them, or making contributions to their campaigns.But pastors are free to do any of those things as private citizens, according to Congressman G.K. Butterfield. The North Carolina Democrat, a former judge, said, “You simply cannot do it in your capacity as the pastor of the church and give the implication that the church is endorsing the candidate.”Lorenzetti said churches can distribute voter guides that educate about political issues without favoring a particular candidate.
