Black Churches Are Becoming Health Spot Ministries Get a Thumbs Up from AT2W!

We think its a great thing for churches, especially in the black community to embrace change that involves taking better care of our health. If we can speak positively about anything in today’s church, it would be living better with better health.

Read report below:

Thanks to an exercise class at her church, Morning Star Baptist in Walnut Hills, Darlene Hughes’ blood pressure, cholesterol and weight all dropped.

Thanks to a cooking class at her church, New Vision United Methodist in Paddock Hills, Aretha Furr has learned the importance of limiting portion size, eating whole grains and reading labels.

Churches are expanding their health ministries in both scope and sophistication and are successful because of the level of trust they have in the black community.
Aerobics workouts, Zumba, cooking classes, healthy menus, weight training, full basketball courts, walking tracks, mammograms and other health screenings are all increasingly part of the black church experience. Health ministries have come a long way since the late 1930s when nurses’ guilds started tending to sweat-soaked ministers and fainting members during fevered Sunday services and funerals.
Accessing the black church’s reach and influence is a way to improve African-Americans’ health.
“Churches are turning into health hubs,” said Dwight Tillery, president and chief executive of the nonprofit Center for Closing the Health Gap, Avondale. “The church is concerned with the total person.”
Again, we love this health talk in the church and this may be one of the only new age thing we really do embrace because we can’t serve God being sick.

Black Churches Will Have to Adjust to FCC’s Viewability Rule Being Lifted

Apparently, the FCC has voted and ruled that the viewability rule will be lifted. Many viewers of faith based programming may be affected if they have not adjusted to the analog to digital switch that occurred in 2009.

Read below the official statement from the FCC and Broadcast & Cable institutions about the details in the change to take place in the next six months:

National Black Church Initiative Urges FCC to Take Action of ‘Viewability Rule’ in News Release

Below, you can read the news release to the FCC and the public about the burden to view their broadcasting content will ultimately be on the viewer if they lose analog access.

If not extended this will harm the church-based broadcasters and limit access

Washington, DC – The National Black Church Initiative (NBCI) a coalition of 34,000 churches spanning 15 denominations and representing 15.7 million African Americans would like to express our concerns that the expiration of the “viewability” rule could have a serious negative impact on viewers of faith-based programming throughout the country. Much of this programming is viewed on must-carry television stations.

FCC May Be Forcing Many Black Churches To Aire Programs On Cable Networks Only

There was a serious demonstration going on Wednesday at Washington’s office of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Reports state that about 35 demonstrators representing a coalition of 34,000 black churches marched in front of the Federal Communications Commission fighting against what would cause the many viewers of faith-based television programs to lose access to them if the FCC lets a rule expire requiring cable systems to carry the shows, says the Root.

Former CEO Ephren Taylor Is Being Labeled The ‘Bernie Madoff’ With Black Tones

This is an interesting analogy of the scandalized former CEO and self proclaimed entrepreneur, Ephren Taylor. Things are piling up upon the case against Taylor and he’s looking more and more like the downgraded Bernie Madoff.

Read report below:

The case against Ephren Taylor is mounting, and it’s starting to sound increasingly similar to that of notorious Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff, as hundreds of alleged victims come forward to join a class action against the “youngest African American CEO of a public company.”

Former CEO Ephren Taylor Accused of Targeting Congregants in Five States

Former CEO Ephren Taylor Accused of Targeting Congregants in Five States
Report from BCCN.com
Two lawsuits filed this month claim the 29-year-old Ephren Taylor was a con artist who targeted worshippers throughout at least five states on the East Coast since 2004, swindling tens of millions of dollars in a Ponzi scheme.
“He knew if he went to a Christian African-American and said, `I can take your hard-earned investment money, and you’re going to earn more money, but more importantly you’re going to do good for your church and community,’ that they would fall for it hook line and sinker,” said Cathy Lerman, an attorney who sued Taylor in North Carolina.
The allegations have tarnished Taylor, who resigned last year after becoming the chief executive of the holding company City Capital. Worshippers would often be asked to invest in real estate and businesses tied to the holding company.

Taylor said he planned to use his own money to help those who feel “negatively impacted.” He criticized his detractors and compared himself to other financial heavyweights who were “crucified” amid the economic downturn.

Hispanics In New York Rally Against Gay Marriage, A Much More Positive Image Than Many African Americans

God bless the Hispanic people of New York for standing up for righteousness for they are a courageous holy people.   They are revealing strength of a blessed tribe, appointed by God, much more than we have seen of the majority of black America who has backed down from morals and values and bowed down to the gay and lesbian community, which is mostly dominated by white people.   God bless the Hispanics of New York for being bold, presenting the body of Christ, according to God’s Word.   It is very sad to say while they are fighting for the right to uphold marriage between a man and a woman, Rev. Al Sharpton and a lot of black churches have opposed righteousness.  Throughout history, civil rights activists stood up against racism, but in the 21st century, they have not been a strong tribe to stand up for righteousness before the nation, not many and not in unity.  While many black pastors and bishops and transforming their churches into gay affirming churches to be more accepted and not rejected by homosexuals, Hispanic ministers, representing over 150 churches in New York rallied Thursday against the state’s gay marriage bill, which is one vote short of being legalized in the New York Senate.  However, they are showing their support for one of the fewest African American black pastors, Sen. Ruben Diaz who publicly and courageously spoke against gay marriage, recently after his daughter had a wedding ceremony with a woman.

Dozens of Police Break Up Brawl at NC Church

We’ve stated it before and it will be mentioned again, there are doors of many churches that need to permanently close all across America, because they are open every Sunday for the wrong reasons.  This situation in Fletcher, North Carolina involved several church members fighting, in disagreement over Rev. LeVonia Ray proceeding on as the Pastor of Greater New Zion Baptist Church.   Sources say some of the church members support Rev. Ray as pastor and others say he is no longer able to remain pastor.  Was it worth a brawl on God’s property?  Absolutely not.

Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded because of his “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.”, says CNN reporter. The committee had nominated Obama last year in September before he was announced the 44th President of the United States. The nomination was not publicly known at the time so this was not only a surprise to the President but to many others as well.

President Barack Obama Wakes Up America In Concern For Violence Among Teens In Chicago

president_barack_obama421Back in the mid eighties, there was a case in Oakland, California at Oakland Technical High School that involved the murder of a teenager, Andrae Crey.  Many grown people who grew up in Oakland can remember seeing the covered body of the decease in the hallway as students were sent home before dismal.  It is so sad, 20 years later we finally have a black President in the White House who is attracting nation national attention to this case in his native city of Chicago, Illinois.  Just think about, would he have the power to attract attention, if he was not the President of the United States?  Students of Christian Fenger Academy say the violence has been going on for a very longtime and you had to deal with it, before anyone cared to address the problem.
