First AME Church In L.A. Sues Former Pastor For Abusing Credit Card for Church

The drama never seems to cease with the former pastor of this church. As long as he and his wife feel they are still entitled to get their positions back in that church, the fight will continue.

Read report from L.A. Times below:

A month after the oldest black church in Los Angeles sued its former pastor, his wife and a small “cabal” of church leaders for financial improprieties, one of the defendants in the civil suit denied wrongdoing and called the lawsuit a “witch hunt.”

First AME Church of L.A. Sues Former Pastor John J. Hunter and Wife For Conspiring to Maintain Control of Church’s Business
The oldest black church in Los Angeles, First AME Church of L.A. has filed a lawsuit against its former pastor John J. Hunter, his wife Denise for refusing to relinquish control of the church’s nonprofit organizations.
There’s a 14-page lawsuit, which was filed last Tuesday by the First African Methodist Episcopal Church. It is filled with allegations against the Rev. John J. Hunter and his wife, accusing the couple and other leaders of “holding dictatorial control over [the church] … for their own personal gain — both financially and for self-aggrandizement.”

New Pastor of Los Angeles’ First AME Church, J. Edgar Boyd Preaches 1st Sermon
The Rev. J. Edgar Boyd is the new pastor of First African Methodist Episcopal Church in L.A. He delivered his first inaugural sermon on last Sunday in hopes to unite and heal a congregation that had become fractured over the troubles of its former leader.
Pastor Boyd spoke on forgiveness at the oldest black pulpit in Los Angeles.

“Holding grudges cripples the soul,” Boyd said. “It makes you weak… The time has come to cleanse us and welcome us in the favors of God.”
Only a week ago, Bishop T. Larry Kirkland unexpectedly reassigned the former pastor, John J. Hunter, after a controversial eight years that included a sexual harassment lawsuit, a federal tax investigation and questionable use of church credit cards, news reports say.
Pastor Hunter has moved to Bethel AME San Francisco, and Kirkland appointed that church’s pastor, Boyd, to take the helm in Los Angeles.
The Presiding Bishop  Kirkland of the AME church has remained quiet on the reassignment. He told worshipers at the 10 a.m. service on Sunday that despite receiving a threat to “destroy my family” for removing Hunter, he had to find someone who would move the church forward.
“This is our flagship church,” he said to a thunderous crowd. “And we cannot afford to let it go down. We have worked too hard for too long to bring the First church to where it is.”
 The LA Times states:
But critics had complained that the church’s attendance, tithings and social activism had declined under Hunter’s tenure. Others expressed concern with Hunter’s use of personal security guards, his inaccessibility and his refusal to live in the church’s South Los Angeles community.
Kirkland reassured congregants that Boyd was different. While serving at the largest AME church in San Francisco for two decades, Boyd increased its assets from $12 million to more than $80 million, Kirkland said.
We see, it really boils down to dollars and cents!

Morris Brown College Files for Bankruptcy: Chapter 11

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the move is a last ditch effort to prevent the school from being foreclosed on and sold at auction.

The 131-year-old historically black college is facing foreclosure next month after investors called $13 million worth of bonds tied to the school.
The bonds were issued in 1996 by the Fulton County Development Authority. The school had pledged several pieces of property as security. An auction of assets was set for Sept. 4.
Chapter 11 gives federal protection to businesses unable to pay their debts and allows reorganization. A lawyer for Morris Brown says the emergency filing delays the foreclosure until a judge decides otherwise.

Officials said the college is facing foreclosure after investors called $13 million worth of bonds tied to the college.
Former Atlanta City Councilman and Morris Brown graduate Derrick Boazman called the development “heartbreaking.”
The school is planning a prayer vigil Saturday, where plans to move the school forward will be discussed.
Benjamin Harrison is a spokesman for the 6th District African Methodist Episcopal Church, which oversees the school. He says officials will talk about reorganizing and restructuring as well as finances.
