FAKE STORY: NC Church Pastor Is Charging $10 for Members to Attend Sunday Service?
NC Church Pastor Is Charging $10 for Members to Attend Sunday Service?
UPDATE on June 1, 2014: Thanks to one of our readers, we now know this story is fake. It was originated from The News Nerd satire blog. This really does not make any sense because even TV news shows are picking this up. Shame on them for spreading such lies and making it as legitimate news stories. We apologize to anyone offended by this because it is apparently not true.
Read original story below from May 29, 2014:
Thursday on TV One’s “NewsOne Now” is “What the Hell Thursday,” where host Roland Martin and the panel discuss some of the craziest headlines in the news. This week, the panel – which included R&B Diva Syleena Johnson – discussed a North Carolina church that charges parishioners an entry or what they can call a cover charge fee of $10 person or $60 per annual fee, at a discount.
The pastor of the Winston Salem, NC church says he has been paying so many church expenses our of his own pocket that it is time the members start paying too!
First things first: Why would they include this story in their “What the H… Thursday” episode? We know its a fitting story but not so appropriate name. Secondly, R&B singer Syleena Johnson probably has no bearing on the conversation because she doesn’t even know how to dress for the occasion with her chest showing.
Here’s more on the story:
Mount Ebenezer Baptist Church says the fee was a direct result of church members and visitors not giving enough offering to keep the doors open.
The Church’s pastor, Rev. James Lamont, spoke with local news station WSTV saying,
“We realize charging members to attend church would not be a popular decision, however it was necessary to remain operational. There is a lot that goes on to make these services happen. Without a sufficient amount of donations, the church would have to operate at a loss. We are in the business of saving souls, but we are also a business. Salaries and bills have to be paid. Saving souls ain’t cheap.”
Members of Mount Ebenezer Baptist Church will be allowed to pay a discounted yearly membership fee ($60.00), while visitors will pay $10 at the door. The church says they will also offer a $25 family discounted admission fee (up to four family members). Entrance to the church will be free on all days except for Sunday worship service. Children under 12 will be allowed to enter the church without paying.
Reverend Lamont says the fee was made reluctantly, but after 6 straight months of having to operate the church with his own personal funds, it became necessary.
Well, what can we say. If the pastor is going broke and the church members don’t care enough to give then what choice does he have? Yeah right!! We don’t like the method of course but does he think church members will start giving more in the collection plates or is he punishing them? This is wrong is so many ways.
Maybe the church does not like the pastor and the members want to vote him out. Hmm…
