AT2W’s Take: Should Pastors Preach that Smoking Marijuana is Ok with God or Not?

During a recent conference called “View from the Pulpit: Faith Leaders and Drug Decriminalization,” held at American Baptist College in Nashville, there were religious leaders who spoke out about the harmful effects that the drug war has had versus if people are right or wrong for drug possession or use.

Even though a press release stated: ‘African-Americans comprise only 13 percent of the U.S. population and 13 percent of drug users, they do make up 38 percent of those arrested for drug law violations and 59 percent of those convicted of drug law violations.

Now, one pastor believes God is not concerned with them smoking marijuana.

The Rev. John Jackson of Gary, IN who represents Trinity United Church of Christ in Gary said this:

“I have had several people share with me privately, ‘Reverend, I smoke weed and I know I shouldn’t.’ I say, ‘Let me stop you right there. I don’t believe the God we serve is that small or petty to be concerned about you smoking weed. I don’t think God cares about that.’ I let them know that our God is too big to be concerned about somebody smoking a joint.”

AT2W’s Take: Well, this is what we think about the issue. Marijuana is illegal. It has been illegal since the 1930’s in this country. Though we agree that individuals who get caught with the substance should not get stiff penalties, IT IS illegal, folks. There is no way around it. We have to go back to basics and teach our kids and encourage our community to be law abiding citizens. That is the right thing to do. While we are making excuses for why we think punishments are too stiff, especially in the black community, we are missing the mark when it comes to morality.

Now, speaking of morality: Any pastor that states smoking a little weed here and there is not wrong is WRONG. Again, folks, its illegal to smoke it in this country unless you qualify for medical marijuana. We all know that marijuana is a healing herb for some people’s conditions but when produced and used in this country, many are abusing it and its considered a controlled substance. Since it is abused, sold for a profit, and affects many people’s mental state negatively, it is morally wrong. We personally know people who are no longer in their right minds because they used marijuana or received a ‘bad bag’.

As far as what God thinks, we think that since many people abuse the substance and it has a bad effect on many, God would never agree that using it is ‘o.k. for recreational reasons. Anything that negatively affects our temples, in God’s eyes, is wrong. Also, God and the bible states we should abide my the laws of the land.

So, let’s stop making excuses for doing what the law says NOT to do. This alone will lower our statistics and frankly, we will gain more respect than perceived as defiant.
