Baby Snatcher Ann Pettway of Carlina White Sentenced to 12 Years For Abduction in 1987

The woman who snatched a 19-day-old sick baby girl from Harlem Hospital and raised her as her own for more than two decades was sentenced Monday to 12 years in prison – far less than what prosecutors and the baby’s dad had pressed for.

“It should have been longer,” said the father Carl Tyson after the sentencing of kidnapper Ann Pettway in Manhattan Federal Court. “The judge didn’t have [any] sympathy,” Tyson fumed. “If this had happened to the judge, how would he feel. I would have been a little happier with the 240 months. I’m not too cool about it but what can I do,” he told the NY Post.

Tyson, 47, spoke freely to Pettway, telling her: “You took from me something precious. You hurt me so.” Carlina’s father also said:

“I’ve been suffering for the past 23 years,” Tyson said. “I wanted to reach over there and really strangle her to be honest with that’s the way I felt.”

Carlina White’s mother said she was satisfied with the sentencing.

“It’s not going to make up for the time she was gone, so it doesn’t matter how much they give her,” White told reporters.

“I’m broken into a million pieces,” White said. “I continue to ache for my daughter every minute of every day all because she decided to kidnap my baby.”

Her daughter had been emotionally and physically detached from her new found original family. Her mother says:

“I love my daughter, and I want to be there for her,” said White, 41. “But it breaks my hearts listening to her speak about her ‘auntie’ or her ‘little brother,’ when in fact she is not talking about our family, but another family that has claimed her as their own.”

“My daughter is here. But she is not home yet,” White said. “Pray God, she will be soon.”

She told NY Daily News they do have a relationship of some sort:

“My relationship with my daughter is good,” Joy White told me outside the courthouse, but added: “It has its ups and downs.”

Defense lawyers said last week that Carlina White, 24, “has declined to speak with either defense counsel, the government or the probation department,” adding that she “has a movie project in the works, and refuses to be involved in any way in the criminal case.”

Ann Pettway apologizes to the judge and family

CBS local news reported:

During the proceeding, Pettway told the court: “I went to the hospital. I took a child. It was wrong.” In a letter to the judge before sentencing, Pettway apologized and said the kidnapping would never have occurred if seeking professional help for mental trauma from her failed pregnancies and being able to discuss family secrets had not been forbidden in her family’s home.

“Because of my actions so many lives were hurt,” she said in the handwritten letter.

She said she still loves the woman she raised, “a wonderful bright young woman.”

“All I can do now is ask forgiveness from her and her parents. It may not sound correct on paper but I am hopelessly SORRY,” she wrote. “My action led to such a huge loss for her parents, but there is nothing I can do to right this wrong that I committed.”

Pettway apologized to White and Tyson in court today.

“I am deeply sorry for what I have done. If they don’t accept it, I understand,” she said. “I’m here to right my wrong and ask forgiveness.”

We, here at AT2W, care deeply for the natural parents of Carlina White, Joy White and Carl Tyson. We reached out to both parents for interviews last year and the father gave us a heartfelt interview of a father broken from the abduction and the relationship he longs to have with his daughter. Both parents want this relationship but according to what they stated in the news today, it has not come to pass as of yet, in the way in which they would like. We continue to pray for true restoration to a family that did not deserve such cruel treatment by a selfish woman, Ann Pettway who decided her needs were more important than the parents’ needs. May God bless them to heal in the process.
