DC Councilman Kwame Brown Charged and Plead Guilty to Federal Bank Fraud

The chairman of the District of Columbia Council Kwame R. Brown was charged Wednesday for providing misleading information about his income on loan applications.

Kwame R. Brown is considered one of the most-influential leaders in D.C. government but has been charged with a single count of bank fraud and accused of overstating his income by tens of thousands of dollars. He was accused in a criminal information, a document that generally signals that a defendant has agreed to plead guilty, says news reports.

Court papers say Brown misstated his income by tens of thousands of dollars in loan applications submitted in 2005 for a home equity loan and for a new boat. Federal authorities had also been investigating his 2008 campaign for financial improprieties, but the charging documents do not include any campaign-related allegations.

Brown was charged six months after then-Councilmember Harry Thomas Jr. pleaded guilty to stealing more than $350,000 in city funds earmarked for youth sports and arts programs. Thomas resigned after being charged and was replaced in a special election last month. In a separate investigation, two former campaign aides to Mayor Vincent Gray pleaded guilty to charges stemming from illicit payments intended to encourage a minor candidate in the race to badmouth Adrian Fenty, the then-incumbent. Prosecutors brought a campaign finance charge against the former chairman of the District of Columbia Council on Thursday, one day after he resigned from his seat and agreed to plead guilty to federal bank fraud. He submitted his resignation later in the day and apologized for his actions.

“I have made some very serious mistakes in judgment for which I will take full responsibility,” Brown said in the letter.

“Because of the great respect that I have for the institution that is the Council of the District of Columbia, I have chosen the only honorable course in submitting my resignation at this time,” wrote Brown in his resignation letter.

AT2W’s Take: Councilmember Brown could not have had much respect for the Council of DC or the people of the community when he decided to corrupt his seat on the council. He like Mayor Vincent Gray are both under investigation and even Gray had some interesting words to say about Brown’s actions.

“Never would I have imagined something like this would occur.” Interesting enough, Gray is being investigated for his 2010 election.

We are so tired of seeing the face of the black politician becoming corrupted in front of our eyes. Where’s the integrity in these people?
