Australian Cult leader reminiscent of Jim Jones

John Allan Miller is a 47 year old Australian native who claims to be Jesus. He even goes so far as to say that he remembers the crucifixion and that Mary Magdalene was his wife. Miller’s false teaching has gotten him quite a following with over 100,000 of his DVD’s in circulation. One might ask how seemingly sane, intelligent people would fall for such a thing. We have to look no further than the Bible to get the answer. The Word of God warns us about false teachers and people claiming to be Christ. 2 Pet 2:1 says “But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them-bringing swift destruction on themselves”.

Most cults don’t start off as extreme as Miller’s.  Many begin as God-fearing churches with members who just want to serve the Lord. But when a church abandons their first love and ceases to rightly divide the Word of Truth, pastors quickly become idols and the headship of Jesus Christ is replaced by a fallible man. Before you say this couldn’t happen to me think again. I was in a spiritually abusive church that proved to be in the infancy stages of a cult.  My naivety and presumed immunity from deception would be the thing that made me susceptible to what I despised the most. The lies, deception and betrayal I encountered left me shipwrecked and on the verge of apostasy. Not only was my family affected, but many others as well.

The body of Christ, regardless of what church you attend, is supposed to do just as the Bereans did.  They were commended for examining the scriptures to see if Paul was speaking truth or lies. We are to do as they did. Unsound doctrine can and does lead people astray.  Acts 17:11: “Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true”.  Until the coming of the Lord the church must hold fast to His words…… Mt 24: 23-25 “Then if anyone says to you, Behold here is the Christ, or There He is, do not believe him. For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible even the elect. Behold I have told you in advance.”
