Church Pastor Quits, Says Church Can’t Afford to Pay for Full Time Leader

The old stone church with “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” carved over its door just got its heating and cooling system in order after years of being on the blink.

Now, First Lutheran Church needs a pastoral repair job no mere handyman can fix.

The Rev. Fred Cook, longtime pastor of the 116-year-old Over-the-Rhine church, is leaving.

He doesn’t know when. He doesn’t where he’s going.

But he knows it’s time to find a new job.

“There is no money for a full-time pastor,” he said.

There’s money to run the church. And care for the flock. But there is not enough to pay a full-time shepherd.

The church’s pastoral endowment fund is tap city. Ministerial grant money has run out. The rainy day fund has run dry.
