Tyler Perry Further Exploits Madea Character in New Poster
First, this is a question we have for anyone out there: so when does Tyler Perry need to imitate or use the theme of other shows and movie characters to get people to come to his plays or go see his movies? O.k. someone is going to say, “So what if he does?” Well, we used to be big fans of Perry until he started allowing more violence, profanity and exploitation in his work as in the “Why Did I Get Married” series. We said it before but just when you think you found the modern day black filmmaker with morals and values, they fly out of the window when the “green” gets greener! Guess hanging with big time Oprah will do it to you!
If you didn’t know, Tyler Perry has been coming out with several so called comical posters that are getting people geared for the new “Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family” film to hit theaters in April. First, he started out with the “True Grit”. Second, it was Madea as “The Godmother” (The GodFather) depiction. Thirdly, it was the “Brady Bunch” depiction of Madea’s family in the 70′s sitcom’s Hollywood Squares photo. Another poster illustrated Madea as the “Black Swan”, from the movie “Black Swan”. Now its Madea dubbing a look of “Jersey Shore” but of course his love for Atlanta, he depicts Madea as “Georgia Shore”.
Now again it all seems like just good fun but where’s the creativity? Tyler Perry has usually come up with original work for this character that reminds him of his mother and other female family members. He’s never had to take from other movies or shows to get people’s attention to his famed character Madea. She has always pretty much done it for herself. Yes, many do not like the character of a man (Tyler Perry) dressing as a woman and pimp slapping children in faces for discipline. Oh and what about how this man dressed as a older woman always seems to flirt with some man on the set? Well, yes the character is a woman, but these guys are usually not her age but 30 years younger with bodies to die for, some say. Though there are rumors about Perry’s sexuality, he definitely does surround himself with so called gorgeous bodied young men and Madea always gets a “feel”, doesn’t she?
So, what about this poster? Why does he need to use already popular themes to promote this movie? Is he losing money like many other businesses and industries during this slow to go economy? Well, we said it before, being creative is one thing but using other themes to entice people to see your movie months ahead is another thing entirely. Also, all of these crazy hats he’s putting on Madea is further exploiting an already outrageous character. This one above is definitely letting Perry experiment with Madea being a younger woman and what does this do to a man who constantly has to dress as a woman? Just when we heard him say a few years ago, that the Madea character needs a huge break and didn’t know when it would come back, now he’s glowing in it again.
The fact is: a man dressing as a woman, young or old, just isn’t funny anymore.
