Malcolm X’s Daughter Malikah Shabazz Faces Criminal Charges in NY

News reports state on February 22, authorities have extradited Malikah Shabazz, youngest daughter of twins from Malcolm X and mother Dr. Betty Shabazz, from North Carolina to New York for alleged identity theft charges from 2009.

Shabazz, holds a doctorate in Educational Administration and Human Development but is allegedly going to have to stand trial in Queens, NY for charges: grand larceny, stolen property, and criminal possession of forgery items.

The crimes Malikah Shabazz is being charged involves the stolen identity of a family friend who is said to be the widow of Malcolm X’s bodyguard whom was with him the day he was assassinated. “She used the fake identity to charge more than $55,000 in the victim’s name between August 2006 and November 2007,” says Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.

The start of the investigation came when investigators were looking for a previous resident at the North Carolina home of Shabazz when they allegedly found a warrant for her. (Hmm… Not sure if that’s even legal.) At the beginning of that month, the Shabazz sisters were arguing over portions of their parents’ estate when accusations were voiced about theft and irresponsibility. This is what sounds like a set up on someone’s part against Malikah Shabazz.

Though the sisters had their qualms over family estate business, they made no hesitations to fly to New York and be by their sister’s side when they heard the news.

“We’re all sisters, despite the false and vicious reports put out in the media,” twin sister Malaak Shabazz said this Tuesday. “We love her and our niece dearly. We’ll get through this.”

This was very sad news when you think about how much strife and misfortune has attacked the militant family. Some say its the cost of being militant. Others say its the intimidation of whom dares to stand for what they believe.
