roger_avery_tweeting_in_jailAward-winning screenwriter and director, Roger Avery has been serving jail time for vehicular manslaughter. Avary pleaded guilty in August to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, says a reporter.  Avary was driving more than 100 mph when his car hit a telephone pole on January 13, 2008, in Ojai. Passenger Andreas Zini, 34 -a friend, was visiting with his wife during their honeymoon was instantly killed, and Avary’s wife, Gretchen, was ejected from the car and injured.

He has began tweeting since September 26, around the time he began serving his sentence at Ventura County Jail northwest of Los Angeles.  It has been said state inmates are not allowed access to the Internet while in custody; however, Avary was part of a furlough program that allowed him to leave jail to work a job during weekdays while spending nights and weekends behind bars.  They have tightened up security and deleted the celebrity’s tweets regarding his moments in jail.

What crime is tweeting?  As long as Roger Avary is not tweeting about anything that is illegal, he should have the right to tweet.  As a born writer, he should have the freedom to tweet whatever is on his mind and entertain while serving time.  Obviously, he feels very bad about accidently killing his wife’s friend and injuring his wife, he needs to get his hurt out.  Other inmates as well should have the right to tweet while serving time in jail, twitter is not only fun, but it is good therapy.
